Proquest - Lesson 3 - Aug. 22, 2010 - I went on to Proquest for the SD Library Challenge tonight.
1. Basic Search/Report findings: My first search was Type 1 Diabetes. This search resulted in 16,769 articles. Obviously too many articles! Next I changed my search to Type 1 Diabetes among teens. I had 3 results! (Wow - what a difference!). Next I tried Teens with Type 1 Diabetes. This time I received info on 20 documents. So I need to remember to tell the students to try different searches if at first they don't succeed. I read an interesting article from Diabetes Forecast - Karen Murner, Henry Rodriguez, Diabetes Forecast, Alexandria: April 2009, Vol. 62, Issue 4; p. 16 (1 page).
2. Publications A-Z - I wanted to see what Reading magazines/articles were available. I clicked on The Reading Teacher. This magazine has issues from Jan 1988 (Vol 41, Issue 4) to Current. Full text coverage, however it is delayed 1 year. (which is a little disappointing - but I'm sure the magazine wants the reader to subscribe.) I think it will be a valuable tool!
Great, BinchyFan, you are so right about searching. When at first you don't succeed, try a different way. The "Suggested Topics" at the top of the results page help, too. You are also right about publishers not releasing the current year. Many do, but some do not, and that is outside the control of the vendor. Thanks for your comments.
